Springfield, Virginia – A 30-year-old cold case that shocked the community has been solved after a breakthrough in DNA technology led to the confession of the murderer, Stephan Smerk. Robin Lawrence, a 37-year-old mother, was killed on November 20, 1994, and her body was discovered two days later by a friend. The lengthy investigation faced many challenges over the decades but regained momentum due to advances in genetic genealogy.

Lawrence was found with extensive knife wounds and signs of a struggle in her home, which included blood on the walls and scattered tissues and baby bottles. Robin’s daughter, Nicole, who was just two years old at the time, was present and wandering the house, having survived a traumatic event as she had undergone a liver transplant as a baby. The initial investigation focused on her family, including her husband, who was away on a business trip during the incident.

While initially considering the family, investigators did not find any evidence linking them to her murder. The crime scene showed no fingerprints, complicating efforts to identify a suspect, although a blood-stained washclothwas found. Unfortunately, DNA extracted from that washcloth did not match anyone connected to Robin Lawrence.

The investigation progressed slowly for years until cold case detectives Melissa Wallace and Jon Long began reviewing the case in April 2021. The breakthrough came in 2019 when the Fairfax County Police Department turned to genetic genealogy for assistance via Parabon NanoLabs. Volunteer genealogists began tracing distant relatives through shared DNA, ultimately resulting in a composite sketch of a suspect.

In 2021, the investigation zeroed in on Smerk, a computer programmer living in Niskayuna, New York. He had no prior criminal record, but detectives were able to obtain a DNA sample from him after he willingly consented. Shortly thereafter, Smerk reached out to law enforcement officers, expressing a desire to confess to the crime.

On September 7, 2023, during an interrogation session, Smerk confessed to killing Robin Lawrence. He claimed to have been under the influence of substances at the time and described how he surprised Robin in her home while wearing a ski mask and gloves. Smerk detailed the attack, emphasizing that he did not feel remorse for his actions, primarily expressing regret for the loss of his own freedom.

The DNA evidence from the washcloth ultimately matched Smerk, confirming his involvement in the crime. A significant development in the case was recognized by the Lawrence family, who expressed relief and gratitude for finally receiving closure after three decades of agony and uncertainty.

On March 7, 2025, Smerk was sentenced to 70 years in prison with the possibility of parole after 12 years. The impact of Robin’s murder has deeply affected her family over the years, and now Nicole, who was only a toddler when the tragedy struck, is confronting her grief and working to honor the legacy of her mother, an artist.

The story of Robin Lawrence serves as a reminder of the enduring pain caused by violent crime and the tireless efforts of law enforcement in seeking justice. With new technologies emerging in forensic science, cold cases like this one may find resolution and bring solace to families affected by similar tragedies.
