Lake Tahoe, California — Lane Closures and Construction Projects Planned Next Week

Motorists traveling through the Lake Tahoe region should prepare for multiple lane closures and construction activities scheduled for next week. The California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) has announced various projects that will impact roadways, particularly along State Route 28 (SR 28), and nearby areas. These projects include pavement rehabilitation, utility work, and bridge maintenance, with schedules subject to change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Major Pavement Rehabilitation on SR 28 in Tahoe City

A significant $31.7 million pavement rehabilitation project is underway on SR 28 in Tahoe City. The contractor for this work is Mercer Fraser Company from Eureka. The project involves extensive resurfacing and roadway improvements between Commons Beach Road and Grove Street.

Construction activities are scheduled nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., beginning Sunday, August 24, and continuing through Thursday, August 28. During this time, work will affect westbound traffic, with bi-directional traffic implemented to maintain traffic flow through the construction zone.

Important restrictions include the prohibition of street parking within the work zone. However, access to cross streets and driveways will be maintained to ensure residents and businesses can still be reached. Additional work is planned on Friday, August 29, from 7 a.m. to noon, to complete certain phases of the project.

Utility Work and Daytime Activities

Alongside pavement work, CalTrans has scheduled utility work in the region. On Monday, August 25, and Tuesday, August 26, utility crews will operate between Star Harbor Court and Lake Forest Road (west). This work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Additionally, broadband utility installations are slated for SR 28 from Monday, August 25, through Thursday, August 28, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.. This stretch extends from the junction of State Route 267 in Kings Beach to the Nevada state line.

Overnight utility work is scheduled for Sunday, August 24, from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday, between Park Lane and Harbor Avenue in Brockway. Such work may cause temporary disruptions but is necessary for infrastructure upgrades.

Fanny Bridge Closure and Traffic Detours

One of the region’s most prominent landmarks, Fanny Bridge in Tahoe City, will be closed to all traffic until Saturday, November 15. During this period, travelers wishing to access Tahoe City will need to use alternative routes. Detours will be in place via Lake Boulevard to connect to SR 89 and SR 28, aiding in navigation around the closure.

Despite the bridge closure, West Lake Boulevard will remain open for local access, and the transit center will continue to operate. The pedestrian and bicycle path spanning the Truckee River Dam will also stay open, allowing non-vehicular passage despite the ongoing construction activities.

Additional Construction and Utility Work

Along with pavement rehabilitation and bridge work, pile driving activities are scheduled for Saturday, August 23, and Sunday, August 24. These activities are expected to produce noise and vibrations that may temporarily impact nearby residents and travelers.

On the eastern side of the region, utility work on SR 28 will continue between Kings Beach and the Nevada border from Monday, August 25, through Thursday, August 28, during daytime hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In Placer County, utility work is scheduled on SR 89 from South Street to Fern Street in the Homewood area. This work will take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., also spanning from Monday to Thursday.

Conditions and Precautions

All scheduled activities are subject to change based on factors such as weather conditions, equipment availability, or unforeseen events. Motorists are advised to stay alert for traffic signs, obey posted instructions, and plan for potential delays during these periods.

Travelers should anticipate variable road conditions, including reduced lane widths, temporary closures, and detours. It is recommended to check local updates before embarking on travel through the region.

CalTrans emphasizes the importance of safety and encourages drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to stay informed about ongoing work and exercise caution in the construction zones to ensure their safety and the safety of workers.
